Mrs. Vera Hanks Crocker
January 30, 1922 - February 1, 2022
Mrs. Vera Hanks Crocker, age 100, passed away, Sunday, February 1, 2022 in Mobile, AL. Mrs. Crocker was born and raised in Bratt, Florida, where she lived during her childhood years with her mother and father and nine siblings, including her twin sister, Vira. She began her career with the Federal Civil Service providing administrative support for the Department of Defense at Brookley Field in Mobile, Alabama, where she met her husband, Seneca Eldridge Crocker, whom she survived after his untimely death in 1964. When the Brookley facility was relocated to Warner Robins in Macon, Georgia, she moved there along with her mother, Lydia Inez Hanks. Upon Vera’s retirement, they moved back to Pensacola to be nearer relatives, and eventually built a home on their family farm in Bratt, where they both resided until their deaths. Vera was a great lover of the outdoors, particularly gardening, and was admired not only for her “green thumb”, but also for her ability to pursue such a strenuous hobby throughout her life, much to the amazement of friends and relatives. She also loved to travel, and undertook several automobile trips around the United States, usually accompanied by her favorite travel companion, her mother. Their itineraries included cross-country trips to California and other distant places, usually to visit relatives. Vera also documented her family history. She researched and compiled information on the Hanks families for five years, which involved reviewing many documents, such as the U.S. Census, Church records, and published historical accounts, as well as visiting relatives for oral histories. She completed her compilation in 1993, and it has become an invaluable resource to her family. Other hobbies included woodworking where she learned to build furniture and cabinets for her home, as well as ceramics and quilting, writing poetry, baking cakes, and holding family reunions. Mrs. Crocker is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Collin C. (Lydia Ledkins) Hanks, her husband, S.E. Crocker, and her seven siblings. She is survived by one sister, Louise Larker, of Long Beach, CA.. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home LLC with Rev. Doug Odom officiating. Burial will follow at Godwin Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 6, 2022 from 1:00 PM until service time at 2:00 PM at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home LLC. Pallbearers will be Donald Ray Hanks, Darrell McElhaney, William Hadley, and Joseph Stewart. Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC. Atmore, AL. is in charge of all arrangements.
